It is difficult to leave, to say "see you someday," at the very moment when you love the most. These are hard words, a difficult time, and a somewhat uncertain future. Jesus takes up the theme of farewell, but He does so in the way that is best for His disciples. He assures them of His love for them and of being with them always. He says to them: "I will not leave you orphans."
Who do we usually call an orphan? We use that word when we think of children who have lost one or both parents. We don’t typically use this expression for older people. Yet, Jesus says to the apostles: "I will not leave you orphans..."
Relationship is what matters most right now—our relationship with God. But how do we build and maintain it? This is where the difficulties begin. We are attacked by evil at this exact point; our relationship is threatened by problems. Very often, we think about these problems without God, and that leads to terror because we don't know what to expect, and things don't look good. Our human strength is small. Difficulties bring us to a point of fear where we see that nothing will help, and there is nothing we can do to change a thing.
Take, for example, Abraham and the promise God gave him: "You will have a son." He waited over twenty years. Think of Noah, who struggled to accept the flood and the punishment. Or the Israelites leaving Egypt with the Egyptian army chasing them and the Red Sea ahead of them. It was an insurmountable obstacle. Then came the serpents in the desert... God was teaching them, and is teaching us, to trust Him.
This is the path to eternal life. Do we know this path? Without Christ, reaching eternal life is impossible, so we are like children. The Lord Jesus promises us two things: that He will ask for a Comforter for us, the Spirit of Truth, and that He Himself will come to us. However, there are two conditions we must meet to receive the Holy Spirit: we must love the Lord Jesus and be obedient to His commandments. And then, it will happen...
