"...Jesus said to his disciples: 'You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden...'" (Mt 5:13-16).
A week ago, Jesus spent His time on the mountain, where He taught and presented the program that became the heart of His mission. The Beatitudes—how beautifully Jesus constructed a path for every person who dares to accept this call. Over the three years of His public ministry, He walked this path Himself, inviting us all to step onto it and, above all, calling us to build a relationship with Him. Because everything begins with a relationship.
Today, Jesus presents the attitude of those who dare to follow Him and live the Eight Beatitudes daily. He compares the stance of a believer to salt and light. Let us try to understand Jesus' words and the metaphors He used to define the character of His disciple.
Salt. What was it, and what was its significance? Salt prevented food from spoiling; it was something of great importance. It gave flavor to meals. Salt was considered a tool of purification and fidelity. In this context, as disciples of Christ, we are called to be salt in every environment where our lives unfold, purifying them and making them good. In Jesus' time, the salt used in homes was not well-refined; it came from the Dead Sea. To use this impure salt, it was dissolved. Sometimes, after dissolving, the liquid did not contain much salt, and the mixture was thrown away as useless. The Lord Jesus uses this everyday experience to encourage us to maintain unity in thought and action.
Light, on the other hand, is necessary for sight. Light has a deep theological meaning. The Word, which was with God from the beginning and is God, is the true light "which enlightens everyone" (John 1:9). In today’s Gospel, we hear the words: "Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." This is an invitation to conversion—to change what was dark, gray, and expressionless. It is a call to abandon my own perspective on the world and instead accept and use what God gives in return.
We are to care for the Kingdom of God, which means remaining faithful to God. This raises a question: Am I, today, one who maintains a bond with God—a very good relationship—and lives by it every day?
